10 September, 2009 ThursdayChinese Heritage Museum - Superb Culture and History Display
Practically in the heart of Singapore's Chinatown is the excellent Chinese Heritage Museum. Chinatown seems to spread across several areas but the museum was within one of the market streets packed with stalls.
The Chinese Heritage Museum consisted of all three floors of an old shophouse and although this sounded quite small (the building was narrow), the engaging displays were packed with objects and artefacts and plenty of information. We spent a good two hours poring over them.

In the land of kimchi, it felt like a homage to make a trip to the small Kimchi Field Museum at the COEX mall and try to understand more about the pickled cabbage and its health benefits! To say nothing about the fact that it was close to where we were staying and it happened to be pouring with rain outside at the time...
But I'd not be giving the place full credit as it turned out to be a nice little visit with a couple of highlights.

The National Folk Museum is set within the grounds of the Gyeongbokgung - the Palace of Shining Happiness and entrance was free with the admission ticket to the palace. Made up of buildings comprising several stories and a pagoda to boot, the place felt completely at home amongst the palace architecture.
We visited the Gyeongbokgung on a pretty hot day and so the blissfully air-conditioned museum was a welcome diversion about halfway through our visit.

Gyeongbokgung or the Palace of Shining Happiness is one of several royal palace compounds in Seoul, rebuilt several times but still offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into Korea's feudal past.
I wasn't expecting anything of the size the Gyeongbokgung's grounds covered and we had to brave the sun's unflinching rays throughout our outdoor exploration. Not that it was regrettable. The architecture, massive courtyards and maze of corridors made for excellent photo opportunities and gave us a decent dose of Korean history.

The War Memorial Museum of Korea is a massive and impressive place documenting the history of warfare in Korea. It was where Linh and I discovered more about the Korean War that divided the country - a highly significant event in Korea's history, with repercussions still happening today.
Having arrived in the afternoon at the nearby Samgakji metro station (Line 4 or 6), we ended up spending four and a half hours going through the three floors and the outdoor exhibition area.
In February 2009, Mark and Linh moved from the UK to the Far East to spend 16 months living in Hong Kong and traveling around East Asia. This website documents their journey.
