Recommended Portico 21 Hotel in Chiangmai

In Chiangmai, we stayed at the Portico 21 hotel. I don't post about every hotel we stay in, only the exceptional ones that we'd be happy to revisit and Portico 21 is one.

Hotel-Portico1-1

We usually book our hotels based on a combination of price and reasonable level of amenities and location, so that we find something affordable, but don't scrimp so much as to leave us with a bad experience. We certainly don't need five star luxury. But with a touch of design, Portico 21 feels like a sophisticated but inexpensive place to reside whilst being close to a few attractions.

Located in downtown Chiangmai, it's a short 15-20 minute drive from the international airport and when we first arrived via taxi, it was via a dimly-lit alley which didn't reassure us. Until that is, we saw it.

Portico 21 was clean, modern-looking and with a few interior touches in both the foyer and our room that suggested a personal attention to detail with the design. In fact, we found out later that the very helpful, and trendily dressed man behind the reception was actually the owner of the hotel and had apparently designed it himself.

Strangely, over the course of our stay, we didn't see many other guests, even at breakfast, although we were told that the hotel, containing several floors, was almost booked up. But better less than more guests, as every time we left to explore the town, we had the chance to talk to the owner, Narin, who always gave us helpful tips and suggestions on what to do (at our request).

With regards to Portico 21's proximity to Chiangmai's attractions, it was usefully around the corner from the daily Night Bazaar on Chang Klan Road, where we found ourselves a few times, and across the road from Thapae Gate, where we spent one evening at the Muay Thai stadium there.

Portico 21 is definitely our recommended hotel in Chiangmai!
