MangoVine - Mah Boon Krong (MBK) Center in Bangkok

The MBK Center, also known as Mah Boon Krong, is a large, eight storey high shopping mall in Bangkok. Opening in 1985, it is also one of the oldest shopping malls in Asia and hosts around 2,000 stores, restaurants and entertainment facilities.

MBK can be reached on foot via either of the BTS Skytrain stations Siam or National Stadium, and isn't far from other major shopping destinations such as Siam Paragon or Central World.

However, with limited time to shop, it might be worth including MBK as it seems full of stores containing lots of inexpensive items - so many that if you're after clothes, accessories, cosmetics, souvenirs or electronics, you could easily spend half a day or more here, ticking off your shopping list.

Linh and I didn't have much to get but our "quick visit" to MBK still lasted a few hours, browsing a few floors and aisles out of interest.

At MBK, it was the first time that we saw a whole shop full of artists whose job it seemed, was to reproduce photo portraits. We did see more places like this afterwards, notably at the Chang Klan Road Night Bazaar in Chiangmai.

As did this pair of monks. To this day, I still can't work out why they were checking out the colour nail varnishes.

As with most shopping malls we've come across in Asia, MBK had a food court area so we took one of our meals there. This rice dish came with crispy pork and limp pork (!), and the dessert below that is a durian sticky rice.

MBK had pair of large Spirit Houses in front of one their entrances.
