Dong Trieu Ceramics and Pottery Village

After a fantastic day so far at Ha Long, we begin our journey on the road back to Hanoi, but we stop off at the Dong Trieu ceramics and pottery village. Its a place that sells all kinds of ceramics, embroidery and marble statues and at arrival, we enter the large showroom with all these goods on sale.

Everything gleams and is presented nicely but in contrast to smaller urban shops whose goods may be knock-offs coming from anywhere, you can be assured these are genuine, handmade quality handicrafts. That's because they are stamped with the place's name and you can go round the back to see the workshops where all the goods are made.

We're not taking tiny back room either. There's a massive warehouse at the back housing some sort of kiln and groups of ceramic products in various stages of casting, coating, and painting.

Smaller rooms coming off the warehouse show shelves and racks of products with some packaged ready for transportation.

Amongst the goods sit teams of local staff working on them or single artists like this woman hand-painting all the decoration on each of the vases!

Outside the warehouse towards the back, there are vats of some kind of black dye, that some staff are dipping vases into. The smell is pretty strong!

Coming back into the shop, we entered another room which seated a couple of rows of more crafters, this time diligently stitching strands of wool to create embroidered artworks. The designs are inscribed first, so they're following visual guides, but the time and patience required still raised our eyebrows!

All the products on sale are priced accordingly for tourists and so would be expensive for locals but I thought the prices were still reasonable. There's an added value to see the workshops where these goods are made too. However, apart from a mug Linh bought for her father, we didn't buy anything since we're conscious of accumulating too many things during our overal time in East-Asia.
