MangoVineAdventures in East Asia
Chiangmai Chinatown
12 December, 2009
Saturday
With all the Chinatowns that we've been to around East Asia, we still found ourselves heading to the one in Chiangmai. Well, that's another one to tick off the list. Chiangmai Chinatown had Chinatown-style gates but to be honest, I'm not sure how Chinese it really was. But at the same time, sometimes in a foreign country, nothing beats walking around a place like your own hood.

Alot of the stuff we saw for sale at the Chiangmai Chinatown seemed generic to any culture or just seemed Thai. Having said that, I don't believe I could tell much difference anyway. I need a big red sign board over every pile of stock to understand whether it was Chinese stuff or not.

This Chinatown seemed to be one big market place with each area followed by another stalled area. It was fairly busy though that was probably because we went on Saturday. The stuff on sale was typical of any (local) market - fruit and veg, dried seafood, flowers and snacks.

This guy wielded a massive wok to fry these things. Does anyone know what they are?

You can count on displays being arranged to look good.

Or at least look good to whoever you buy these fruit baskets for.

Like other Chinatowns, you can count on there being something unusual to the western eye.

Simple bowls of something look a bit more unexpected when seen up close.

I think these are toads on their back with all these intestines pulled out for show.

Practically opposite the toads was a stall selling more insects like the ones we'd seen in Bangkok.

These pickles must definitely be Thai.

There was a bunch of stalls making up and selling these bouquet offerings. Very colourful.

Are these packs of tobacco and / or betelnuts?
