In Ueno Park's large pond, there is an island which houses the Benten-do Memorial. Benten is a patron goddess of the arts, though to us, this wasn't obvious on visiting the place.
The Benten-do Memorial is made up of a shrine housed within a hall that has a two level pagoda at the back.
The grounds were pretty peaceful, with passerbys mostly seeming to make use of the island to just get across the pond.
It also seemed to be an ideal place to walk the dog - or just sit the dog, judging by a few of the visitors there.
The Benten-do Memorial doesn't take long to walk around, though I did find the views from it to across the pond and beyond, to be particularly interesting.
In February 2009, Mark and Linh moved from the UK to the Far East to spend 16 months living in Hong Kong and traveling around East Asia. This website documents their journey.
