In Beitou, we wanted to check out the fantastically-named Hell Valley which is the area's most famous site. Hell Valley comprises a pool containing scalding hot water that can reach boiling point temperature.
We were looking forward to viewing a bubbling, steaming pool, dangerous enough to have once scalded a visitor to death, who unfortunately fell in during the mid-1990's.
Following the directions however led us past what was previously the entrance and to a road up above, from which we could overlook the pool of death. It turned out that the entrance was actually gated off (signs in Taiwanese) since Hell Valley was closed - how long for we didn't know. We expressed our realisation and disappointment in the video below...
Perhaps another season (possibly in Winter) would be a better time to visit Hell Valley.
In February 2009, Mark and Linh moved from the UK to the Far East to spend 16 months living in Hong Kong and traveling around East Asia. This website documents their journey.
